ASA 106, Women’s Sailing Seminar, and NY

[Cue the Jeopardy music] The American Sailing Assoc. 106 (Advanced Coastal Crusinig), a Women’s Sailing Seminar, and NY all have this in common. While my smart-ass friends will definitely send me any number of technically correct responses, the correct question is, “What is Wild Rumpus!”

Wild Rumpus has been busy busy busy. This chart is a very rough picture of Wild Rumpus’s adventures over the last couple of months.

Next up, I’ll meet the boat and crew in Norfolk, Virginia, and we’ll sail back down to St. Thomas, about 1600 miles of lovely offshore sailing.

Before giving you the highlights of the fun we had in NY, I am happy to announce two upcoming opportunities aboard Wild Rumpus: 1- we will offer a week-long Caribbean ASA 106, and 2- a women’s sailing seminar taught by one of the best sailors I know (who happens to be a woman).

Offerings

Women’s Sailing Week

In March 2024, we are offering a Women’s Sailing Week. Captain Kira Maxner will offer a one-week clinic to up your sailing game aboard Wild Rumpus in the US Virgin Islands. Kira is one of the best sailors I know and a great instructor. Although she is an American Sailing Association instructor for beginner through advanced classes, this week is offered outside the confines of an ASA curriculum.

Assisting Kira with the class will be our very own Stacey Carter, an accomplished sailor in her own right. Stacey sailed Wild Rumpus from South Africa up to Massachusetts and knows Wild Rumpus better than anybody.

As a seminar rather than a class with a specified curriculum, Kira can be more flexible in who can attend and leave plenty of time to address the needs of the particular students. I’d take this class myself, but I am told no men are allowed. RUDE.

ASA 106

Thanks to Modern Sailing, I’ll teach an ASA 106 -Advanced Coastal Cruising on Wild Rumpus in April. We’ll navigate around the islands, visit numerous bays, and do a night sail with a rotating watch schedule. There may even be time for visiting the islands and a few cocktails.

If you have your 101-104, you can sign up for the class. To get the 106 certification, you will need your 105 (navigation) class completed within six months of the class, your Caribbean 106.

Modern Sailing’s information page has all you need to know.

New York

After the Bahamas lightning issue, we waited for months as repairs were undertaken. The crew eventually departed the Bahamas and worked their way up the East Coast of the U.S. Eventually, Teresa and I met Wild Rumpus in NY for a lovely time of mostly hanging out. We managed to get off the dock a few times with friends and family, which was the point of going to NY.

For the first few days, we were graced with a visit from our friend Cathy, whose husband was off sailing up the western coast of the US from San Diego to San Francisco. We gave her a good tour of NY. (No, she and Teresa are not related, but due to hair bias, they are often confused for one another.)

Eric and Stacey weren’t super familiar with NY either, so we walked and walked and walked.

Among our many stops, we visited Washington Square Park.

And, of course, McSorley’s.

Some beer may have been consumed in the 30 minutes we were there.

After a long day of walking, we relaxed at a lovely rooftop bar (and really pissed off the manager by improving the furniture arrangement).

We also spent time with some old friends (no names, ages, or reasons of affiliation mentioned to protect the innocent)

One of our guests had a friend working in Manhattan at a building overlooking the harbor. This photo is from his building.

Sometimes, people are so anxious to visit us that they show up an hour or so early. Nick said that he didn’t want to “miss the boat.”

And then there are those friends so reliably late that you just lie to them about when things start.

New York was, as always, fantastic. The Brooklyn One 15 Marina was also lovely and offered a pretty spectacular evening view.
